Digital Identity Management in Norway Is a Catastrophe

Norway's digital identity management system, while successful in many respects, creates serious problems including social exclusion and human rights violations, according to University of Oslo professor Marte Eidsand Kjørven. Private companies like BankID control access to essential services, leaving vulnerable populations—including elderly people and those with disabilities—unable to participate fully in society, effectively denying them basic rights and services. Kjørven criticizes Norwegian authorities for failing to provide adequate public oversight and legal protections in this rapidly implemented digital ecosystem.
