FDA OKs first new sunscreen ingredient in more than 25 years

The FDA has approved bemotrizinol, the first new sunscreen ingredient in over 25 years, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays without leaving white streaks like mineral-based sunscreens. The ingredient, long used in Europe, will initially be sold in the U.S. under the brand name Parsol Shield by Dutch manufacturer DSM Nutritional Products and represents the first ingredient approved through a streamlined process authorized by Congress in 2020. The approval addresses a longstanding gap in American sunscreen technology and will be available to other manufacturers after an 18-month exclusivity period.
