Scientists have successfully created a synthetic cell from nonliving components that grows, replicates its DNA, and divides—demonstrating for the first time that basic cellular functions can be achieved with lab-assembled biological materials. While the artificial cell cannot survive independently and lacks essential features like waste removal and defenses, it represents a major breakthrough in synthetic biology and brings researchers closer to understanding how life could emerge from nonliving matter. The fully customizable system could eventually be used to produce biofuels and drugs, and to answer fundamental questions about the origins and nature of life.
