Astronomers have discovered powerful winds driven by galactic collisions and supernovae that rapidly expel the gas needed for star formation, potentially explaining why the early universe contains unexpectedly large numbers of "dead" galaxies. Using the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers observed the galaxy CRISTAL-02, which is ejecting material twice as fast as it forms stars and could become completely inactive within 50 million years. This mechanism offers a simpler explanation than previously proposed theories for why massive galaxies in the early universe grow and die so quickly.
