Healthy but Sedentary People Show Early Decline in Cellular Energy Production
Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz found that sedentary but otherwise healthy individuals experience significant declines in mitochondrial function, with muscle cells showing 28-36% reduced efficiency in energy production and up to 49% lower levels of key proteins needed to burn sugar and fat. This cellular decline, which may precede serious diseases like diabetes and Alzheimer's, suggests that lack of exercise—even in people without obvious health problems—fundamentally alters how cells process energy at a molecular level. The study's authors emphasize that regular exercise acts as protection for cellular health and suggest that early detection through exercise testing could allow doctors to prescribe targeted exercise programs to restore mitochondrial function before disease develops.
