Scientists have discovered that queen bee development depends not only on royal jelly diet but also on specialized wax used to construct queen cells, which contains higher levels of unsaturated fatty acids and different physical properties than worker cell wax. In experiments, queen larvae placed in standard worker cell wax had a 62.5% mortality rate, demonstrating that the chemically engineered "bespoke" wax is critical for queen survival and development. The research reveals that dedicated, younger worker bees physically overheat their bodies to process and chemically alter this royal wax, creating an optimal environment for future queens.
