Sogen Kato

In July 2010, the mummified corpse of Sogen Kato was discovered in his Tokyo home, revealing he had likely died in November 1978 at age 79, with his death never reported to authorities. His family had fraudulently collected approximately ¥9,500,000 in pension money intended for him over several decades, leading to fraud charges against two relatives. The discovery prompted an investigation that revealed poor recordkeeping had resulted in authorities being unable to confirm whether 234,354 people over age 100 were still alive.
