The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve stores hundreds of millions of barrels of crude oil in massive underground salt caverns at four sites along the Gulf of Mexico, each cavern holding about 10 million barrels. This solution is far more practical than alternative approaches like above-ground tanks (which would require 1,130 tanks covering 45,000 acres) or underground concrete facilities (which cost hundreds of billions of dollars and face groundwater contamination risks). Salt caverns provide secure, low-cost storage that can release oil quickly during supply disruptions while remaining protected from attack.
