Researchers have sequenced the genome of *Lanmaoa asiatica*, a mushroom in Yunnan, China that causes vivid hallucinations of tiny people in over 96% of those who eat it undercooked, yet it contains none of the known genes for psilocybin or ibotenic acid that produce psychedelic effects in other fungi. This discovery suggests the mushroom operates through an entirely unknown biochemical pathway for producing hallucinogens, representing a potential third family of psychoactive mushrooms. The study also reorganized the broader *Lanmaoa* genus by sequencing 53 specimens and formally describing two new species.
