US-Canada border library gets new Quebec-only entrance

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a historic landmark built across the US-Canada border in 1904 to allow shared access to books and performances, has opened a new Canada-only entrance after US security restrictions barred Canadian visitors from using the original Vermont-side entrance in October 2025. For over a century, visitors from both countries moved freely through the building crossing the border marked by black tape on the floor, but tighter Trump administration security rules forced the costly creation of an alternative entrance from a former emergency exit on the Canadian side.
